Founded in July 25 1515 by Adelantado Don Diego Velázquez, Santiago de Cuba was the sixth Cuban villa and first capital of the country; at first it was granted the title of city in 1522 and that of province in 1877. Controversial Hernán Cortés was his first mayor.

From any elevation in Havana the first thing a visitor sees in the urban landscape is the solid construction of the capitol´s dome, as a preeminence if we are near or as someone jumping and sticking its head out to call attention if we are far.

And so the capitol was built to call attention, imposing respect and awe from the solidity of its stones and high columns, a metaphor about the responsibility of the exercise of power, republican values, democracy and the greatness of the state as an institution.

Sixty years after Magallanes and Sebastián del Cano doubtlessly proved, after a troubled trip around the world, that the earth was spherical, Englishman Sir Francis Drake commanded an expedition that for the second time, completed in 1581 such feat.   He returned to England with a shipload of gold and silver taken away from the Spaniards on passing the Caribbean during his voyage, but above all loaded with herbs, plants, aromatic seeds, leafs and all types of spices gathered during his trip around the world.
